The roots of the customary bridal shower originated in Holland. If a Dutch bride was unfortunate enough to have her father not approve of her choice of husband, he would not offer a dowry. Her friends would then “shower”her with gifts so she could still be married to her groom., without the help of her father.

Hi there, I am by no means an expert on weddings, but I’ll help where I can. So I’ll answer your questions in order:

Halloween themed - I’ve posted a few cakes which could potentially fall into that category but Cakewrecks (google it) is a website about cake fails, but every Sunday they post the best cakes they’ve ever seen. There are lots of awesome halloween themed cakes. So take a look and feel inspired :) Decorations, not really, but I can give you a few ideas such as little pumpkins, autumn leaf garlands and wreaths and plenty of candles. Perhaps pine cones,fruit and flowers from the autumn season. Dresses, I posted a beautiful black one some time back, titled “Who says you have to wear white” post number 6537306023. Other than that, I would say it’s a very personal choice for a bride - so pick something you want.

I have posted as many gay and lesbian wedding images as I’ve been able to find, but sadly there’s not that much source material. I do regularly post news items, when they come up,  about progress/developments in LGBT marriage laws as I am a staunch supporter of marriage equality.

Lastly, I don’t really know what a male engagement ring is supposed to be like. That’s like saying a woman’s engagement ring must have diamonds, and we all know that’s not necessarily true. What I will say is that, from what I know, men who decide to have an engagement ring, usually have a thinner version of a wedding ring and they wear both together after marrying. Harriet Kelsall does some beautiful bespoke puzzle rings which split into two and can be worn separately as engagement and wedding rings.
